Nani Mau Gardens is a tapestry of color in the rainforest, just outside of Hilo, on the road to Volcanoes National Park. Carefully managed programs for the cultivation of many thousands of unusual flowers, including unique orchids, has brought recognition to Nani Mau as a premiere garden experience in the Pacific. Knowledgeable guides teach visitors about genetic crossings and cultivation to create floral color, texture, shape and size. A museum offers insight into the Big Island's natural habitat, culture and people. The trails can be walked or traveled by motorized vehicle, complete with a surrey on top, to provide protection from the Hilo mist that makes the gardens so lush and beautiful. The grounds themselves are an artistic endeavor with flowers appearing painted on the landscape, as in a European estate. Nani Maui is located on Makalika Street, 3 miles from Hilo. |
